THIS STEEL ROAD BIKE IS SO CAPABLE, YOU CAN HIT EVERY SURFACE IN A SINGLE RIDE. DON’T BELIEVE IT? I RACKED UP ALL THIS IN ONE DAY:
FOUR STRETCHES OF GRAVEL ROAD A new, lighter, custombutted steel frame, 40mm Clement X’Plor MSO tires, a Whisky No. 9 carbon fork, plus a longer wheelbase and relaxed steering geometry gave me more stability and control through loose gravel. (The bike can also clear 650bx47mm tires, so on other occasions, I subbed them in for the rowdiest dirt rides.)
ONE SECTION OF SINGLETRACK Thanks to the 12-degree flared drops that effectively widen the Salsa Cowbell handlebar, I had some extra leverage over the front end to navigate bumpy terrain, including a few tame singletrack trails.
TWO TOWN-SIGN SPRINTS The Cosmic Stallion displays admirable road manners, with a smooth ride and a touch of liveliness. Want a little extra jump on mostly paved rides? Throw on some lighter road wheels and 28mm tires.
ONE SHORTCUT THROUGH A PUBLIC PARK To show off the dazzling black, gold, and white paint job, of course.
THREE TOUGH CLIMBS The 2x11 SRAM Rival 22 drivetrain has a low enough gear (50/34 chainring, 11-42 cassette) that I could grind comfortably up steep dirt climbs.
ONE GNARLY DIRTROAD DESCENT Heavy-duty, WTB i19 tubeless-ready rims withstood quite a beating, and the hydraulic disc brakes work well overall, though they did get hot enough to fade and squeal on the longest, steepest descents. (Suggested fix: Swap the almostpassé 140mm rotors for 160mm.)
ONE SMALL JUMP Hey, even roadies should get air.
ONE ORDER OF FRENCH FRIES, OBTAINED THROUGH THE DRIVE-THRU Three bottle-cage mounts meant I had plenty of water to wash them down.
UNTRACKED NUMBER OF HIGH FIVES IN THE PARKING LOT The universal way to close off one damn good day on the bike
