DEVINCI TROY CARBON X01 12S

READ ALMOST ANY OF MY mountain bike reviews over the last few years and you’ll see a strong preference for 29er wheels on most bikes with less than 160mm of travel. However, every now and then a 27.5-inch model comes along and reminds me how fun and flickable that size can be—like the 140mm-travel Devinci Troy. About halfway into the first ride I quit thinking about the details and just enjoyed what turned out to be one of my favorite trail bikes regardless of wheel size.

Launched last year, this bike was a tad ahead of its time. It’s sure-footed even on the rough and steep trails that many would consider enduro-bike territory. That’s because, compared with the original Troy, Devinci gave this second-generation model a beefier carbon frame and much longer reach, paired to shorter chainstays. A high/low flip chip at the top of the seatstays allows for a slight geometry adjustment—I strongly preferred the low setting, which slackens the head angle from 67.4 to 67 degrees, and lowers the bottom bracket by 5mm.

Like a lot of newer trail bikes, this one sports a bit more suspension in front, with a 150mmtravel fork. This combo is proving to be an effective setup, giving you an extra margin of error on harder hits or when you fly into that rough section of trail with just a little too much speed.

Like a well-rounded trail bike, the Troy climbs as well as it descends. Its Split-Pivot suspension design pedals great, and the steep seat angle helps you rocket uphill. As long as your pedal stroke is relatively smooth, you’ll rarely feel the need to use the RockShox Monarch RT3 Debonair shock’s pedal or lockout settings, even on road sections.

Devinci’s top-drawer Carbon X01 build leaves little on the wish list of future upgrades. From the SRAM X01 Eagle drivetrain to the Maxxis Minion/High Roller II tire combo and Raceface carbon Turbine R30 wheels, nothing held me back from riding to my personal limits over a wide variety of trails. I still can’t help but wonder how awesome a 29er version of this bike would be. But as is, the Troy is a snappy, quick, and incredibly capable trail bike that anyone can appreciate.
